ROME, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Italian Serie A side AC Milan announced Rafael Leao's contract extension on Friday. The new deal will tie the Portuguese down to 2028.
Having joined the Rossoneri in the summer of 2019, Leao has gone from strength to strength at San Siro, as he contributed 41 goals and 29 assists in 162 appearances and was named the best player of Serie A last season.
The negotiations between the two parties have been dragging on for months as Leao's original deal was due to expire in 2024 while a lot of giants in Europe had sounded out a possible move.
"AC Milan is pleased to announce that Rafael Alexandre da Conceicao Leao has renewed his contract with the club until 30 June 2028," read a statement.
Despite no further details in the statement, Italian media outlets believe that Leao will have a significant rise in pay which is worth five million euro per season with performance-related bonuses, and a release clause of 175m is also included in his new deal.
