BRATISLAVA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- HK Nitra remains top of Slovakia's Tipos Extraliga ice hockey league despite losing a point in Poprad during a 4-3 overtime victory.

HK Dukla Ingema Michalovce had a chance to tie Nitra for top spot but also lost a point in an 1-0 overtime victory against HC '05 Banska Bystrica.

HK Nitra's tremendous start into the new season continues, winning their eighth match in nine rounds so far. The league leaders dominated the second period in Poprad 3-1 but the home team answered with two goals in the final period and pushed the game into overtime. Nitra's forward Adrian Holesinsky became the hero of the match, scoring the golden goal after decking out the goalie on a breakaway.

The fans in Michalovce did not have much to cheer about as the home team only managed to score once against HC '05 Banska Bystrica, deciding the outcome just 35 seconds into overtime when experienced Finish forward Janne Keranen scored from a tough angle.

Newcomers HC Grotto Presov are struggling at the bottom of the standings, losing their fourth consecutive match on Sunday. Slovan Bratislava took a 3-2 lead in the 32nd minute and veteran defenseman and captain Michal Sersen set the final score to 4-2 in the third period in his record 656th match for Slovan.

The reigning champions from HKM Zvolen arrived in Nove Zamky with several players missing from the roster for various reasons, but managed to take a 2-0 lead in the first period. The home team answered in the second period but Zvolen added two more in the final stretch to cruise to a clear 4-1 victory which puts them in fifth place.

After two evenly matched periods, the duel between HK Dukla Trencin and HC Kosice went into the third tied at 2-2, with the visiting team's forward Marek Bartanus having scored both goals. In the final period, Trencin produced a solid streak of three consecutive goals, taking a decisive 5-2 lead and rekindling hopes of leaving the bottom of the standings behind.

After three failed attempts in a row, MHK 32 Liptovsky Mikulas coach Milan Jancuska was finally able to celebrate the 400th Tipos Extraliga victory of his coaching career which totals 855 matches, becoming only the second manager to achieve this feat.

Nitra coach Antonin Stavjana leads this table with 480 wins. The visitors from Spisska Nova Ves managed to tie the game in the second period but Petr Obdrzalek's powerplay goal and Marek Hovorka's empty-netter sealed a 3-1 victory for Liptovsky Mikulas.
