RIO DE JANEIRO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil international striker Adriano will be the next football icon inducted into the Maracana Stadium Walk of Fame.

Adriano will join greats such as Pele, Garrincha, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho in a select group of players to have their footprints molded into a ceramic plaque at Rio de Janeiro's famous stadium.

"I'm super excited. This has always been my dream," the 39-year-old told reporters.

A ceremony to mark the occasion has been postponed because of COVID-19, according to Suderj, the authority responsible for the administration of Rio's sports venues.

"The idea is to honor Adriano when the public can watch games at the Maracana," Suderj president Adriano Santos said.

"Because Adriano's strong affinity with fans of Flamengo and Brazil, it makes no sense for us to invite him now and do the ceremony without a crowd."

Adriano stopped playing professionally in 2016 after a career that included spells at Flamengo, Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Parma, Roma, and Corinthians.

He was considered one of the world's best strikers in the mid-2000s when he enjoyed a prolific scoring run with both Inter Milan and Brazil's national team.
