Remote village earthquakes kill many
The Italy News.Net Monday 6th October, 2008
Rescuers are gathering in a remote mountain village close to Kyrgyzstan's border with China searching for survivors of a powerful earthquake.
So far, the death toll stands at over 70. Half of them are children.
The Kyrgyz quake, which measured 6.6 and was felt hundreds of kilometres around, completely caused an upheaval of the village of Nura, located in the Tian Shan mountains.
All of the houses in the village, made of clay and straw, were destroyed.
Hours later, a powerful tremor also struck a sparsely populated area of China's Himalayan region of Tibet, killing at least 30 people.
Survivors have expressed concern that they will be unable to find shelter as winter approaches.
